Sabbath Day Journey border
This wire is called an eruv in Hebrew. It surrounds an entire community. Under the law you are only allowed to take a certain number of steps away from your own property on the Sabbath. This wire turns the whole city into a single piece of community property and the poles and wires act as gates to that property. Thus a Jew may walk anywhere within the city on the Sabbath day as long as he doesn't go past the eruv.
