The Hike Must Go On
I wanted to post this for the enjoyability of this. Yesterday, Saturday, I took 3 of my 4 Webelos Scouts on a hike near our home. Near enough that I did not have to file a tour permit with the BSA. Yeah for me. As a side note, the missing boy was disappointed he missed the hike. Anyway, I took Adam with us. We planned for either a 2 mile hike or a longer just short of 4 mile hike depending on how the boys handle the first mile.
I asked Adam if he wanted to go on the hike. He, of course, wanted to be with Daddy. I was desirous for him to come with me as, in a few weeks, I will be taking him on the Mary Jane Falls hike near Mt. Charleston. Adam performed wonderfully. The first mile he walked fabulously. I told him he needed to drink lots of water. The middle mile and a half he got tired and needed to stop. But I couldn't ask my Webelos Scouts to take a pace of a 5 year old. So, during the times Adam needed a break, I carried him piggy-back style. I was able to keep up with the Webelos with Adam on my back as he still doesn't weigh more then a heavy overnight pack. The slight problem is Adam does not have straps to easily carry him with. We managed. During the last mile and a half we were able to spot the American flag located next tot he Ranger station. At the top of each little hill I would here Adam say, "I see the flag!" He got so excited he ran ahead of me to join the 2 scouts in the lead about 100 yards ahead of me. I had to force him to stop to drink some more water. As a result, I'm pretty sure Adam will be fine on the hike in a couple of weeks.

I am desirous to make Labor Day, or another day like unto it, a yearly hike somewhere with any grandkids of our parents. David and I did Mt. Charleston last year around this time. Obviously we went by ourselves and did not take any of our children. We decided we wanted to try this as a yearly event. I tell this in a place where I hope you will all see as an invitation for you all. I do not think that this Labor Day any of you will make it to Vegas to join us. As Telima is taking care of a baby blessing around the same time, and those others of us possibly not able financially to go to Vegas with 3 weeks notice. This is to inform you that in the future, any grandkid over the age of 5 is welcome to join us if they can make it to the meeting place. I will personally take responsibility for the safety during the hike and after of your kids. I love you all. As the kids get older, and possibly as I get a little more income, we will be doing harder and harder hikes in the area. These include Pikes Peak, Grand Canyon, and Pine Valley, just to name a few. Have fun. We will try to take picture of our little hike and will post them here as well on facebook, I imagine. Until next time.
