Amen, Jenafer. I totally would have suspended the white students who put the nooses up--or completely expelled them, depending on the exact circumstances. But what a principal/superintendent can do (and should do) is very different from what a prosecutor can and should do. So, yes, the black students who beat up the white kid should have been prosecuted under the law. But NOT attempted murder--give me a break. I feel pretty sure that if they had wanted to kill him, they could have.
