i've never been a fan of a-1 or anything like that. I actually have been a fan of marinading steak for a couple of hours before broiling it. {I agree that thinness is good too}
I cheat and buy the marinade from the store but it's really delicious.

It's made by Grill Mates and it's called Zesty Herb marinade.
I think it goes well on chicken too.
